The Friedman-Bowen Primary Care Scholarship Fund Grants

The Friedman-Bowen Primary Care Scholarship Fund was established through a generous gift to Juan Bowen, MD, from Susanne Cobey to honor the lifetime work of her late husband Barry Friedman, MD.

The MMA Foundation awards Friedman-Bowen Primary Care Scholarship Fund grants each year to spark interest in primary care as a career and to encourage the capabilities of medical students by providing support for student-initiated and student-designed projects that show promise to improve the knowledge or practice of primary care.

Eligibility

Dr. Friedman, a highly-regarded teacher of medical students and residents, dedicated his career to supporting and encouraging medical trainees’ interest and capability to build life-long patient relationships through primary care.

To honor that legacy and spark interest in primary care as a career, the Friedman-Bowen Primary Care Scholarship Fund grants are available to students in good academic standing who are:

  1. Currently enrolled on a full-time basis in medical school at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine or the University of Minnesota School of Medicine – Duluth or Twin Cities campuses
  2. Intend to pursue a career in primary care

Eligible candidates can apply during any year of their education.
