The PMP collects data on prescriptions for controlled substances and monitors their use in order to detect diversion, abuse and misuse. By law, pharmacies and other prescription drug dispensers are required to enter data into the system whenever certain substances are given to patients. Physicians can access the data via a secure online system.
Approaches to Pain: Shared Decision-Making Guide for Pain Management (A Superior Health Quality Alliance tool, brought to us through our partnership with the Minnesota Shared Decision Making Collaborative.)
This Superior Health resource was developed to help patients and providers discuss pain relief options. In this shared decision-making (SDM) approach, patients and providers use the treatment tiers to develop a pain management plan.
The tool focuses on six common pain management issues and situations (e.g., patient is not seeing pain relief with current medication(s)) and offers the clinician and the patient perspectives on each. The tool also shows a decision path for three different tiers and treatment plans, from overuse and injury with musculoskeletal pain to backache/headache/chronic condition pain to palliative care/surgical pain/major trauma.
Below are several educational resources on prescription opioids.
Below are resources to assist physicians in providing medication-assisted treatment for their patients.
