SafeHaven Protections in Minnesota

In the 2024 legislative session, the Minnesota Medical Association championed and passed legislation to support clinicians’ well-being and offer resources for career fatigue, well-being, and burnout. The law went into effect on August 1, 2024.

The Physician Wellness Program legislation, sponsored by MMA member and former state senator Kelli Morrison, MD, allows medical societies to run confidential support programs to evaluate and counsel clinicians on burnout, fatigue, or general wellness.

The confidentiality component of this law assures clinicians that their participation in SafeHaven is no longer subject to discovery or subpoena because of an investigation or lawsuit, or disclosure to the licensing board unless required by other state law.
